What is Melanotan II?

Melanotan II (MT2) is a lab-made peptide copy of a natural hormone called alpha-MSH.

Alpha-MSH, short for melanocyte-stimulating hormone, binds to melanocortin receptors on cells, which sets off the making of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour.

What researchers study it for

• How melanin is made. Researchers study how MT2 binds to melanocortin receptors and sets off melanin production.
• Skin pigment studies. Labs study how skin colour changes in study models.
• Half-life next to MT1. Studies compare its half-life of about 5 to 10 hours with Melanotan I (MT1), which has a shorter half-life of about 1 hour.
• Strength compared with MT1. Lab work finds MT2 more potent than MT1.
